High Temperature Incineration

High Temperature Incineration (HTI) has been focused in the UK on the destruction of Chemical Wastes with hazardous properties in two primary facilities over the last c.20 years, and four smaller facilities focused historically focused on specific hazardous wastes.

High Temperature (above 1450°C) Incineration is focused on the destruction of hazardous substances and so they are often called Hazardous Waste Incinerators – especially Chemical Wastes but also a limited amount of Healthcare Waste.

Whilst HTI sites are focused on Chemical Wastes, they also process some Healthcare Waste (facilities primarily focused on Clinical Waste Incineration are separately listed in WikiWaste, as are Cement Kilns which handle a certain range of hazardous Chemical Wastes as a substitute fuel). Few Residual Waste EfW facilities are able to handle hazardous wastes. This type of infrastructure provides the overview of Hazardous Waste Incineration EfW facilities for the UK, linking to individual pages for each facility that provides greater detail.

Overview

High Temperature Incinerators are limited in number in the UK, with little or no focus on energy recovery. Two new Hazardous Waste Incinerators are in development in the UK at present, one of which is focused on the production of steam for use in a nearby industrial site.

In WikiWaste, High Temperature Incineration is treated as a distinct infrastructure type within the wider Incineration & EfW category. This page provides a structured view across the national fleet and connects through to individual facility pages and Local Authority disposal routes.

Notes/Assumptions

  • Clinical Waste incinerated in HTI facilities is included, but tonnage incinerated in Clinical Waste Incinerators is captured separately
  • Avonmouth (Packcare) and Trackworks are excluded from the graph
  • Newton Aycliffe and Avonmouth are assumed to come in to operation in late 2026, ramping up into 2027
  • Wilton is assumed to come into operation in 2028, ramping up through that year - although it only received plannng consent in early 2026
