Non-Hazardous Landfill

Only a Non-Hazardous Landfill can accept Non-Hazardous Waste which includes Municipal Solid Waste (MSW) and any other Non-Hazardous Waste of a similar nature that meets the relevant Waste Acceptance Criteria [1].

They can also accept Inert Waste for the engineering and cover of the waste, and some of these types of landfill are able to receive Stabilised Non-Reactive Hazardous Waste (SNRHW) in a separate engineered cell [2].

This type of infrastructure provides the overview of Non-Hazardous Landfill facilities for the UK, linking to individual pages for each facility that provides greater detail.

Overview

Non-Hazardous Landfill facilities dispose of waste that remains after reuse and recycling. They historically have played a significant role in the final disposal of such materials but have played an increasingly reduced role as recycling has increased and incineration infrastructure has been delivered over the last c.10 years.

In WikiWaste, Non-Hazardous Landfill is treated as a distinct infrastructure type within the wider Landfill category. This page provides a structured view across the national fleet and connects through to individual facility pages and Local Authority disposal routes.
