Collection Systems

The Collection Systems category captures the approaches to collection and the associated bins and lorries used.

Not only does the waste determine, to a large degree, the types of bins and resultant lorries used to move and empty them, the design and philosophical approach to the overall collection system is key in determining how the waste is presented for collection by waste producers, the frequency of collection, and the resultant haulage/transport to appropriate infrastructure for processing.

Types of Collection Systems

The following core groupings bring together the main approaches, with some content to be further developed over time:

Local Authority Household-Based Systems

The design approaches to collecting household waste from households and the bins and lorry combinations used.

Commercial Waste-Based Systems

The design approaches to collecting commercial waste (similar in nature to household waste and with similar obligations under Simper Recycling legislation in England and similar obligations in other countries) from businesses and the bins and lorry combinations used.

HWRC Site Systems

The design approaches to collecting household waste from HWRC sites has a combination of bin and lorry systems that reflect the diverse nature of the wastes collected.

Single-Stream Dry Recyclable Systems

The design approach to collecting a single waste dry recyclable waste type in a dedicated bin with a specialist lorry. This might include, for example, textile ‘banks’ and glass bins and these might be used at HWRC sites, in supermarket car parks, and on commercial premises.

C&D Waste-Based Systems

The design approaches to collecting construction and demolition waste is focused on heavier materials such as soil and stone and bulkier materials such as wood and plasterboard. Bins and lorry combinations used to focus more on skips and ro-ro configurations and tippers.

Liquid Waste-Based Systems

The approach to liquids and sludges from industrial sources and sewage-type wastes (for example cess pits and gullies) focuses on specialist tankers. Liquids may also be specialist chemicals and hazardous wastes that require specific solutions.

Purpose

The Collection Systems category lists collection design approaches, aligned with waste types and collection design approach with the bins and lorry types used to service such approaches.

Approach

In some cases a bin and lorry combination may be dedicated to a single or very similar waste, but in many cases a particular bin may have multiple uses (for example an 1100 wheelie bin might be used for dry mixed recyclable or residual waste) and a particular lorry may be able to pick up a range of bin types or sizes (for example a kerbside collection lorry servicing a household can service food waste caddies, boxes and bags for dry recyclables, and loose cardboard). This page and the linked pages create linkages between the bins and systems that are generally aligned to different waste types.
