Key Metrics

A number of Key Metrics are reported for the UK that monitor the delivery and performance of policy and legislation. This category captures those Key Metrics and links to pages associated with them.

The main Key Metrics in the UK are reported via the UK statistics on waste[1], which in turn link to other databases. There are some Key Metrics that are not captured in this report, however. This includes, for example, the report on the Government’s progress towards its 25 year plan, which includes minimising residual waste.

This page excludes producer responsibility schemes where there are no specific targets or metrics associated with them, for example batteries.

Type of Key Metrics

The following are the main metrics reported and captured in WikiWaste:

Local Authority Recycling Rates

Individual performance listed by each authority is listed in the relevant authorities’ page and compared on the page linked here.

The UK recycling rate for waste from households

The overarching performance for each country in the UK, and the UK as a whole, is reported in the Recycling page in WikiWaste, and in addition to the individual listing on each authority page, WikiWaste lists all authorities and their recycling performance as a list of ranked Metrics.

Municipal Waste Targets

A series of recycling targets and reductions in landfill are set out in the page in WikiWaste on MSW Targets which the UK statistics on waste[1] measure progress against.

UK biodegradable municipal waste (BMW) sent to landfill

As series of targets were set for delivery by 2010, 2014 and 2020 which are set out in the Biodegradable Municipal Waste page in WikiWaste which the UK statistics on waste[1] measure progress against.

Packaging waste recycled

Packaging waste recycling targets for 2025 and 2030 are set out in the page in WikiWaste on Packaging Waste alongside the annualised targets for recycling of each material and progress achieved for the UK.

Reduction in residual waste

The target for reducing residual waste (excluding mineral-based waste such as soil and stone) (kg/person) in England has been set for 2042 and is set out in the page on Residual Waste Targets in WikiWaste.

Key Metrics content in WikiWaste draws on multiple sources, combined and maintained by the WikiWaste editorial and data team. Typical inputs include:

  • Official regulator and government datasets (permitting, waste statistics, compliance scheme reporting).
  • Specialist industry reports and open publications.
  • Operator and Local Authority information on facilities, contracts and performance.
  • Monksleigh modelling and derived datasets where appropriate.

Detailed methodology, including the relationship between WikiWaste and Monksleigh’s datasets, is set out in the Methodology & Sources section. Each page referring to metrics will also carry its own reference notes and last-updated date.

Purpose

The Key Metrics category captures the main metrics measured in assessing progress towards policy and legislative targets and links them to associated pages within WikiWaste.

Approach

The main targets and progress towards them are captured from a variety of referenced data sources, with local authority key metrics captured on a single page that allows comparison between performance.

Other metrics are captured in WikiWaste, for example total waste generated in Waste Types, but these are more general reporting of metrics that do not necessarily have associated targets to measure progress against.
